在英格兰和威尔士，受保护建筑分为三种类型：
一级（Grade I）：特别感兴趣的建筑物。
二级*（Grade II*）：特别重要的建筑物，具有特殊意义。

以前有一个非法定的 III 级（Grade III），于 1970 年被废除。
受保护建筑的标准包括建筑兴趣、历史兴趣以及与重要人物或事件的密切历史联系。受保护建筑约占英国建筑存量的 2%。
